TWPA celebrated International Women’s Day

The Turkish Women’s Philanthropic Association of England (TWPA) celebrated International Women’s Day and Mother’s Day on Friday8 March, the event saw members and community members join together to celebrated in north London.

In a statement TWPA Chair Seyyare Beyzade said: “The TWPA celebrated International Women’s Day and Mothers Day on Friday 8th March 2024. It was a wonderful occasion attended by many. There was a wonderful joyous ambiance that resonated throughout the Grand Palace Heather Suite. Her Excellency Cimen Keskin and TWPA chair gave talks and  honour women and mother all over the world for the shining example of women’s determination to succeed their immense contribution to society and the true embodiment of the Women’s Equality. Thoughts and prayers were also sent for the women and mothers struggling to survive in war torn countries across the world. Poems were read and games were played making the afternoon one that will be fondly remembered.

“This years mother of the year was given to ex Enfield Councillor and Health Minister, Yasemin Brett for her selfless dedication in helping hundreds of women within our community and beyond. She has made incredible differences to so many lives while also bringing up her son.”

Presenting Brett the awarded was the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus London Representative  Çimen Keskin, who as also attending the event as a special guest.

In her speech at the event, Keskin highlighted that this year, we welcome International Women’s Day on March 8 under the dark shadow of ongoing wars in different parts of the world, especially in Palestine. She emphasized the unacceptable persecution and unsustainable situation in the face of this, stating that women and children are the most affected in wars. Keskin underscored the urgency for all states and international mechanisms to take initiative without further delay in the face of this unacceptable oppression and unsustainable situation.

Stating that International Women’s Day is an important day where we celebrate women’s social, economic, cultural, and political achievements, Keskin emphasized our commitment to women’s rights and the fight for equality. She noted that from the past to the present, Turkish Cypriot women have worked shoulder to shoulder with men in every stage of our people’s social existence and sovereignty struggle, contributing significantly to the development of our society with the resilient spirit of our women.

She thanked TWPA for their services to the the UK Turkish Cypriot community, which has successfully continued its journey for 53 years, setting an important and admirable example by showing what women can achieve when they come together.
