Voting for second round completed in the UK

REGISTER voters have completed the second round of voting in the Turkish Presidential elections in the UK.

Candidates failed to win a majority vote with current president Recep Tayyip Erdogan gaining 49.4% of the votes and Kemal Kilicdaroglu having 45% and third candidate Sinan Ogan, receiving 5.2%.

Overall candidates needed 50% + 1 vote to secure a win.

Overseas voting in the UK took place over the last week with ballot boxes set up in London, Manchester and Edinburgh between 8 am to 10 pm from 20 to 24 May.  In Leicester, voting was held from 20-21 May.

In the second round of voting, voters were given the choice between Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Kemal Kilicdaroglu.

In Turkey, voting will take place on Sunday 28 May and the result is expected to be announced on Monday 29 May.

According to the data of the Supreme Election Board (YSK), there are approximately 127 thousand voters registered in the overseas electoral database.

The Turkish Ambassador Osman Koray Ertaş said: “Unlike the previous round, we increased the voting hours by 2 hours. Our citizens will be able to cast their votes from 08:00 to 22:00.”, Ertaş noted that they have taken all measures to ensure that the voters can cast their votes in peace. Bekir Utku Atahan, Turkey’s Consul General in London, is also registered in England. Atahan said that the Turkish voters showed great interest in the ballot boxes.
