Starmer said: “The devastation caused by earthquakes in Turkey and Syria has been felt all around the world, including by the communities here in the UK who know those affected. On behalf of the Labour Party, our thoughts and prayers are with the 55,700 victims, and their loved ones.

“In times of crisis, we must stand together. That’s why, since the beginning of this crisis, I’ve been clear that my Labour Party fully supports the UK’s commitment to support the rescue and recovery effort.

“That sense of support is clear to see at the London Alevi Cultural Centre in Haringey, which I had the pleasure of visiting on Friday. Here and across the UK, communities are working tirelessly to provide the much-needed support to those affected by the disaster through the DEC Appeal.

“We must continue to help in every way we can. The British people have always shown themselves to be generous and I’ve no doubt they will do so again to support the people of Turkey and Syria as they rebuild their homes, and their lives.”
