The Association of Turkish Women (BTKD) held an event for the benefit of earthquake victims on International Women’s Day.
The members showed great interest in the afternoon tea attended by Turkey’s Consul General in London Bekir Utku Atahan and his wife as well as other chairs from London organisations.
BTKD President Servet Hassan announced that over £3,000 of donations was collected at the event, BTKD has carried out since the earthquakes took place and have raised over £6,000 donating the funds to 6 institutions working for earthquake victims.
At the event, Consul General Atahan said “England is one of the countries that sent the most aid from abroad”.
Hassan said, “We would like to celebrate International Women’s Day under different conditions. As with every year, let’s talk about the theme of that year by the United Nations. Let’s talk about what we have achieved and what should be done. However, in the face of the magnitude of the earthquake disaster we experienced, unfortunately, everything suddenly lost its meaning. While we are trying to grasp the painful balance of the earthquake here, this earthquake disaster also affected women the most, just like in natural disasters that took place all over the world,” emphasizing the need to consider the psychosocial needs of women as well as their physical needs.
