Community groups organising fundraisers for Turkey and Syria

Community groups and members of the Turkish-speaking communities continue their effort to help those affected by the deadly earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria.

Thousands of donation boxes filled with essential items have been sent to the hit regions from across the UK over the last 2 weeks. Many drop-off points were forced to stop collection after receiving an overwhelming amount of donations and many of the groups have now turned their efforts towards fundraising for donations.

This weekend a number of events are taking place all with one goal to fundraise donations.

On Friday 24 February a music event called ‘Traces of Anatolia’ will be held at the Kamran Djam Lecture Theatre, SOAS University of London at 10 Thornhaugh St, London WC1H 0XG will be taking place at 6.30 pm performances will be given to Ozan Baysal and Melisa Yildrim. The event is free to enter and all donations from the night will be passed on to relief effects in Türkiye and Syria.

On Sunday 26th February the ‘Epic Trek’ will be taking place, the Luton Lions will be making a 30-mile journey from Luton to the Turkish Embassy in London, you can sponsor and donate to their gofundme.com page by searching Luton Lions.

On Sunday in north London the Turkish Woman Philanthropic Association (TWPA) will be holding an afternoon tea, tickets are £10 and the event will be held from 2-5 pm. The afternoon tea will give community members a chance to share their pain together. TWPA said ‘We all need to talk, What better way than with friends’ it will be held at the headquarters at 113 Bruce Grove London N17 6UR.

A Family Fundraiser event for all ages will be held in north London, as well on Sunday. Food, drinks, and dessert are just a few things you can enjoy at the event, a small entry fee of up to £5 at the event which will have kids mascots and stalls such as face painting, henna, glitter tattoos, raffles and more organised by Sheniz Aslan it will be held at Grand Place Banqueting Suite, 242 High Rd, London, N22 8JX from 1-7 pm.

Over the last week, a number of sponsored walks have taken place as well as fundraising events by the greater community living in London. Local schools across the capital have had cake sales,  Osidge Primary school in Southgate raised over £3,220  while older students at University College London (UCL) and the London School of Economics and Political Science’s (LSE) Turkish societies clubbed together and raised £4,600 in a single day with the British Red Cross at their bake sales.
