AWP show their support for protesters in Iran

THE Ataturk World Platform (AWP) shared a statement in support for protestors in Iran following the death of Masha Amini who died after being taken into custody by “morality police,” in Tehran on 13 September 2022 after she was accused of failing to wear her headscarf in the ‘correct manner.

Saying “We join the thousands of protesters raising their voices for #Mahsa_Amini, who, for inappropriate public exposure.  Just three days later and while in custody, Ms Amini suffered a heart attack and died. She was 22 years old.

“The death of the young woman, most likely caused by injuries she received while in police custody, is a tragic result of the ongoing repression and attacks against women human rights defenders in Iran. Legislating compulsory veiling rules is not only against human rights but is also against natural law. Persecuting women or inflicting gratuitous violence on them on the basis of arbitrary religious tenets is nothing short of inhumane. As stated by the Acting United Nations Human Rights Chief; this tragic death must be promptly and impartially investigated…

“The Ataturk World Platform vigorously promotes secular democratic values and wholeheartedly supports the fearless voices of women in Iran against discrimination and oppression— as it does of women across the rest of the globe. Once again: LIFE, WOMEN, FREEDOM, AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS!”
