TWPA held a seminar on dementia

THE Turkish Women’s Philanthropic Association (TWPA) held a panel on dementia on Friday, May 6th.

The seminar was given by speakers Dr Akan Efe and Dr Mekella Mehmet – Yeşil, who has been practising medicine in England for many years and are well known by our society.

The event was held at the TWPA building in north London where members attended along with the guest  Sibel Tatar, the wife of The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Ersin Tatar and the TRNC London Consul Buket Kop.

Speaking to the London Gazete, TWPA Chair Semahat Mustafa evaluated the seminar they held before the ‘Dementia Awareness Week’, which took place across the country on May 15 – 21, 2022.

“The TWPA wanted to host an event on dementia because we hear the term a lot these days, but most people don’t know much about it. We now have TWPA members and family members suffering from dementia and we felt it was important for us to better understand this situation.

“A  couple I know, the wife of the woman was pretty forgetful. Some days she doesn’t even remember her own grandchildren and says she wants to go home even though she’s already at home. It’s really sad for his family to see him like this and not know how to handle the situation. As a society, we’re not very good at talking about this kind of thing or even where to go for help, so we’re grateful that Dr Mekella Mehmet-Yeşil and Dr Akan Efe could join us so we can demystify dementia or dementia and help steer people on the right path.” Added that they are very happy for the courtesy visit Sibel Tatar made to their association to bring light to the conversation which affects the community.
