40 Turkish speaking councillors elected in London

On Sunday(May 8) night, the last borough to call their election results in London saw Croydon Council tipping into no overall control.

Labour won 34 seats on the council, with the Conservatives close behind on 32 seats. The Green Party won two seats, and the Liberal Democrats one seat.

The result was a minor gain for the Conservatives in the capital after the party lost control of Westminster, Wandsworth and Barnet to Labour.

Thursday’s vote has resulted has been celebrated as positive for Labour in London gaining control of 3 new councils.

However, the party lost control of Tower Hamlet to the Aspire Party, and Harrow to the Conservatives, while in Croydon they were unable to hold onto control.

Overall Labour holds control of 21 councils in the capital, Conservatives control 5 councils followed by the Liberal Democrats with 3 and the Aspire party holding one.

Mayoral Results

Labour Mayor Damian Egan was re-elected in the Lewisham elections, as well as Labour mayor Rokhsana Fiaz of Newham and Philip Glanville in Hackney

In Croydon, Conservative Jason Perry was declared Mayor after beating former Labour Mayor Val Shawcross by 600 votes.

In Tower Hamlet Lutfur Rahman, who had been found by an election tribunal to have engaged in corrupt and illegal practices and banned from standing in public office for 5-years unseat the incumbent mayor, Labour’s John Biggs, under the banner of his Aspire party.

Turkish speaking councillors

Londoners went to the polls with 66 candidates from the Turkish, Turkish Cypriot and Kurdish communities racing to gain seats across 12 London councils.

Nearly half of these were in Enfield where 33 candidates, were followed by Waltham Forest with 11 along with candidates across Hackney, Haringey, Bexley, Croydon, Camden, Ealing, Lambeth and Wandsworth.

Following the final results from all the boroughs now in, 40 of the 68 candidates have won seats on their councils.
