ATATÜRK Society UK (ASUK) held a panel on ‘The present and future strategic importance of the Montreux Straits Convention, the Kanal Istanbul Project’, on Saturday, March 19, due to the ‘107th anniversary of the Çanakkale Naval Battles’.
Special guests’ included by research writer and Retired Admiral Türker Ertürk and musician and documentary producer Özgür Kıyat as guest artists as well as members from the Turkish speaking community.
ASUK Chair Jale Özer spoke to Londra Gazete following the event saying “Our Admiral Ertürk, passing through a time tunnel, enriched his presentations analyzing the past to the present and the future with visuals, and pointed out the lessons to be learned from our history very clearly. The situation of the Ottoman Empire and the imperial countries around it before the start of the Çanakkale Wars, the process of going to the First World War, how the Ottoman Empire was put into the war, the plans of Germany and other imperial countries to divide and share the Ottoman Empire, for the benefit of the imperial countries only… In addition, the Montreux Straits Convention, Lausanne’s strategy for Turkey’s neighbours and other imperial countries; He explained why this is important today. As a commander who was the Regional Commander in the Black Sea, talking about why the Kanal Istanbul Project, which was requested to be implemented by the government, should not be done, with his experience, knowledge and equipment. He compared the Kanal Istanbul Project with the Möntrö Straits Convention and presented the details of this issue in a clear and simple way that would not leave any question marks in our minds.”
