London bus strike ‘closer’

A possible strike by London’s bus driver came a step closer over a call to end “glaringly unfair” pay disparities.

The Unite union said its members in the capital’s 17 bus operators have indicated their willingness to take industrial action over the “farce” of separate wage negotiations at the companies.

They voted by 96% in favour of action in a consultation, paving the way for a formal ballot on industrial action.

Unite said there was no single collective deal for bus drivers in London, in contrast to Tube drivers, and that pay was negotiated on a company by company basis. Starting rates vary from £9.30 to £11.46 an hour, said the union.
