THE Turkish artist and tutor who specialized in Islamic Illumination Nagihan Seymour work is on exhibition at The Lightbox gallery from May 25- June 26.
The Surrey-based artist explores through her designs the classical elements of Earth, Water, Air and Fire. The exhibition includes paintings and ceramics incorporating natural pigments and precious metals with each wall space of the gallery symbolising one of the elements.
Drawing inspiration from nature in the design process, one of the more challenging aspects of her works is to simplify and stylise the infinite complexity of the natural world and apply that in her patterns and designs.
Nagihan’s paintings are symmetrical designs consisting of naturalistic floral ornamentation or patterns with simple expression. Gold is the main material used in the paintings complimented with acrylic, gouache and watercolour paints on handmade and treated papers. Her paintings are free hand-drawn and painted incorporating 11 to 24 carat gold.
Specialising in Tezhip, the art of illumination and sacred geometry, she has practised this art since her university years, studying traditional arts in her hometown of Istanbul. After her first solo exhibition at The Lightbox in 2017, she became a fulltime artist painting and creating ceramics from her studio in Horsell, Woking.
Exhibition Dates: 25th May 2021 to 6th June 2021
Venue: The Lightbox, Chobham Road, Woking, Surrey, GU21 4AA
