Nearly 32 million have had their first jab according to government figures.

So far 62.5% of UK adults have had their first vaccine and 19.3% they’re second.

It comes as the daily updates have shown just 4 deaths within 28 days of a positive test, 2,963 new cases and 179 hospital admissions for the 24 hour period of April 18.

INDIA ON THE RED LIST

Boris Johnson has cancelled his planned trip to the country as health secretary Matt Hancock announced that India would be added to the UK’s travel ban “red list” this week.

Hancock says the government has been examining the Indian variant to see whether it should be classed as a variant of concern.

He says that the travel ban will come in from 04:00 BST on Friday.

“Between our two countries we have ties of friendship and family and I understand the impact of this decision, but I hope that the House will concur that we must act because we must protect the progress that we have made in this country,” he says.

Hancock says surge testing will take place in areas where cases of the Indian coronavirus variant have been identified.

The Indian capital, Delhi, is due to go into lockdown for a week after a record spike in cases overwhelmed the city’s healthcare system.

The city had imposed a weekend curfew, but reported its highest single-day spike so far on Sunday – 24,462 cases.
