An Enfield councillor has been suspended by the local Labour Party after being charged with assaulting another man.
Haydar Ulus said he will contest the charge against him
Haydar Ulus, 34, who represents the Haselbury ward, was charged on 11 September with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, police said.
The charge relates to an incident in Brantwood Road, N17, that occurred on 20 February, some months before he was elected to the council.
He is due to appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates on 2 October.
Mr Ulus told Londra Gazete he intended to enter a not guilty plea and would “fight [the charge] to the end”, but added he could not comment further until court proceedings are over.
Enfield’s Labour Party confirmed Mr Ulus was subject to an “immediate administrative suspension” from the party.
A statement from the party said: “An Enfield councillor involved in a police investigation has been suspended by the Labour Party.
“Haydar Ulus, who was elected to Enfield Council earlier this year, is the subject of an immediate administrative suspension barring him from representing the Labour Party pending the outcome of the police investigation.
“It would not be appropriate to comment further at this stage.”
Mr Ulus will continue to serve as a councillor but will sit as an independent member until the end of his court proceedings.
An Enfield Council spokesperson said: “Enfield Council understands that legal proceedings are active in relation to this matter. We cannot comment further at this time.”
