THE Council of Turkish Cypriot Association in UK, reported concern that the political rights and interests of Turkish Cypriots were dismissed as part of the Brexit negotiations with the guarantor country Britain with Southern Cyprus.
In a written statement from CTCA, “The UK government has not deliberatel recieeved the approval of the Turksih Cypriots in its decision to open the Sovereign Base Xones, most of which belong to the Turkish Cypriots, for civilian use. Working with Greek Cypriots only hurts the Turkish Cypriots.
Ertugrul Mehmet, Chair of the CTCA made the following statement: “Our society only found out from the press the the UK government is maintaining the dubious 2014 Agreement with the Greek Cypriots. Despite the promises made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to us in 2014, we, the Turkish Cypriots were again excluded, our legal and political rights were undermined.”
CTCA called on the British government to stop the commericial development plans of Cyprus Sovereign Base Zones and stated that the plans were “unalwful”, the Turkish Cypriots want the plans to open civilian use of sovereing bases areas on the island to stop immediately.”
