London travel network undergoes deep clean regime

A deep clean regime is in operation across London’s travel network, as the coronavirus lockdown restrictions are eased.

Transport for London (TfL) said its new commissioner Andy Byford had inspected new cleaning measures across travel networks.

Staff will be using hospital-grade cleaning products to kill viruses and bacteria and key interchanges will also be cleaned more regularly, said TfL.

Measures included wiping down poles and doors on buses and trains with disinfectant every day.

A trial using UV light to clean handrails on escalators on the Tube network is also underway, added the department.

In March, TfL was in the final testing stages of a ”new, longer-lasting cleaning agent” that would provide anti-viral protection for up to 30 days.
