There were many smiles around the room at St Anne’s Catholic school in Palmers Green as the students opened the envelopes that would tell them whether or not they had matched the offers made to them by their first-choice universities.
Across the country, record numbers of students are heading to university this year, even though the A Level pass-rate has fallen for the first time in more than 30 years.
A little under 400,000 undergraduates have been accepted on to degree courses and thousands of places are still available through the course clearing process.
University admissions body UCAS SAID the total number of people going to university could top half a million For the first time this year.
National A Level results for England, Wales and Northern Ireland showed that 98% of exams scored at least an E this summer, down by 0.1 percentage points. It is the first drop in 32 years.

Just over a quarter (26%) of exams received an A* or A grade, but this was also down – by 0.3 percentage points – on last summer.
