Alliance of cultures at Süleymaniye iftar  

Politicians and local religious leaders were in attendance at an iftar meal hosted by the Süleymaniye mosque in Shoreditch.

Metropolitan Police Federation chief Halil Hüseyin, Haringey Traders Association leader Şefik Mehmet, West London police commander Mak Chisty ve Rabbi Herschel Gluck were among those at the iftar

Among those attending the traditional meal, which is held every evening after sunset throughout the month of Ramadan, was Turkey’s ambassador to London, Abdurrahman Bilgiç; Turkish consul-general Emirhan Yorulmazlar; London Assembly member Murad Qureshi; Enfield mayor Ali Bakır, Waltham Forest mayor Terry Wheeler and Haringey councillor Ali Gül Özbek.

Also present was Herschel Gluck in his capacity as head of the Muslim-Jewish Communities Forum, and Faizullah Khan as leader of the Hackney Muslim Forum.

Speaking at the event, Mr Bilgiç said he welcomed the work of the mosque and its associated Turkish-Islam Culture Centre, which presented an opportunity for members of the community to form close relations with one another.

Süleymaniye mosque is distinctive for having the tallest minaret in Western Europe.
