The first Turkish diplomat to be posted to Scotland will be Semih Lütfü Turgut, it has been announced.

Mr Turgut will become his country’s consul-general based in Edinburgh. He previously held the same position at the Turkish consulate in Alexandria, Egypt.

The appointment comes three months after Turkish foreign minister Ahmet Davutoğlu revealed plans to open a consulate in the Scottish capital.

It will build upon the existing advisory service that has been in operation in the city since November 2011, where staff working from temporary offices collect paperwork from expatriates on matters ranging from military service and pensions to identity card procedures and dual nationality.

These are currently forwarded to London but will be processed in-house once the new consulate begins operations.

Turkish Airlines launched flights from Istanbul to Edinburgh Airport in July 2012. Last May, it began operating the route every day.
