“Homesickness is often linked with being lonely”

SOCIOLOGIST, writer and documentary producer Semre Eren-Nijgar participated in the ‘Migration and homesick’ panel as a speaker which was organised by the Limasollular Association.

The panel took place at the Turkish Cypriot Community Association on Sunday, 15 April. The Turkish Cypriot Consul Ülkü Alemdar also attended the event.

The President of the Limassolular Association Arife Retvan made the opening speech and touched upon the struggles of living away from home, therefore, underlined the importance of this panel.

Ülkül Alamdar, the Consul of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, said that the common language of the people who live far away from their country and their loved ones is labelled homesickness.

During the presentation Semre Eren-Nijhar’ın spoke about the factors of homesickness and migration and stated that “In particular within the Turkish society women feel lonely when they are left alone and they link this to being away from their country. When people are occupied with their work or busy with other activities they do not feel lonely or homesickness. However, from the research that I have pursued, I’ve found out that people are aware that they are able to live a great life in this country but once the loneliness feeling is felt the homesickness triggers.”
