The fraud conviction of the former Polly Peck tycoon Asil Nadir is to be reviewed as a potential miscarriage of justice, The Times has learnt.
The Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) is understood to be preparing a wide-ranging examination of Nadir’s claim that he was wrongly convicted of a £30 million fraud and was the victim of a dirty tricks campaign by the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) and the police.
At the heart of Nadir’s appeal are secret documents, withheld from his defence team by the courts on the ground of national security, which concern the role of a police informant who falsely claimed that the tycoon had tried to bribe a judge and a senior Scotland Yard officer.
