It believed that the of the Qur’an exist
in over 50 languages but Muslims are still
taught to learn and recite it in Arabic, even
if this is not their native language and they
cannot converse in it.
Its thoughts to be selected verses translat-
ed in 114 languages worldwide.
Translations are regarded by Muslims as
new versions of the holy book, rather than
as translations in the conventional sense.
However as Islam grows and need for
translation are made the number of full
translated Qur’an slowly increases.
WHEN WAS THE FIRST
TURKISH TRANSLATION?
The earliest Quranic translation in the
Turkish or Turkic language dates back to
the 11th century. There is a copy writ-
ten in the Khorezmian Turkic language
in 1363, which is registered in Istanbul’s
Suleymaniye Library, Hekimoğlu Ali Paşa
The Quran in mosque No:2. This translation in Khorez-
mian Turkic, like other translations of the
Qur’an, is important for language studies.

times of war and peace, and even stipu-

war. The Qur’an is, in short, a school for
Muslims; it disciplines them physically,
morally, and spiritually. Muslims also be-
lieve that the Qur’an was also sent down
in part, to Prophet Muhammad’s heart
on the “night of determination” (Qur’an
44:3 and 97:1), a blessed night for all
Muslims. This event sanctified his life and
made Prophet Muhammad an example
for Muslims to follow. In the Qur’an, God
asked: Am I not your Lord? and those
who chose to worship God affirmed as
Lord responded with the words: Yes,
we bear witness... (Qur’an 7: 172). The
Qur’an is the seal and testimony to this
covenant. Its message is, for Muslims, a
powerful affirmation of divine lordship
and Muslim commitment.
