For the last month I’ve been in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and for the last fortnight I’ve waited impatiently for Sunday night to arrive. Last Sunday 7th September to be quite exact, you must be wondering why? Especially if I’m down to be working the next day. I’ll tell you
My reason for waiting so impatiently, was all down to a music event being held. A concert, you’re probably thinking oh is that all? Well that’s just it, it isn’t.. This concert was extra special, because it was organised and being held in order to help a little girl. Her name is Nefes which means breath in English, she’s three years old. She’s three years old and she is battling with Neuroblastoma cancer.
As I write these words she’s undergoing treatment in Turkey, she’s staying positive and has thousands of people praying for her. Sunday night brought together exactly two thousand people, this happened on an island where people I somehow think struggle to communicate. Nine different acts took to the stage and performed with all their hearts and energy. It was a night where every song, every clap, every cheer and every breath being taken was for only one reason, for Nefes. This very special little girl.
Although I am yet to meet this princess, from the photos I’ve seen and what I’ve heard other say. She’s certainly a fighter, every photo I’ve come across of hers is with a great big smile beaming at you. She seems full of positivity and energy. The night of the concert, one of our friends connected to Nefes and her family via video call. The band playing stopped to announce the call, then asked us all to wave to the phone and on the count of three we would all shout: “Nefes, we love you..!”.. My hairs stood on end and eyes filled with tears.
Such emotion swept right through my fingertips to my toes, looking around it was incredible to see so many people turn out for this three-year-old little girl. Every twenty turkish pound spent on a ticket will be used to cover the cost of Nefes’s treatment. Three thousand tickets were sold on the release day and two weeks later, exactly six thousand. Some people came, some people didn’t and some people simply couldn’t, yet every ticket bought was a great contribution and most of all means so much.
I want to bring to attention the fact this event was organised purely by young adults and volunteers. These people showed courage, belief, motivation and most of all they showed every single one of us on this tiny island and especially Nefes, hope. Hope for the good, hope for recovery and that when there is hope anything and everything is possible.
Nefes, I’m writing these words for you sweetheart, I want you to know that you and your family are not alone. There are thousands of us fighting this battle with you, you are so strong and beautiful and we are all praying for you to make a quick recovery. Thousands of us held hands that night, you are out light and all we had to was reach out and follow it.. We became one breath just for you.
May this be an inspiration and guide to those people who feel lost, alone and confused about humanity.
There is nothing you cannot accomplish if you put your mind and heart into it. Nothing is impossible, the word itself says I’m possible.
