CHP (Turkey’s Republican People’s Party) UK has launched an official “No” campaign against the upcoming Turkish referendum on the Government’s proposed constitution amendments. CHP UK’s recently elected President Hasan Dikme remarked the importance of informing the communities on why a vote of No should be made, by saying a possible approval for the constitution amendments would damage the democratic nature of Turkish Republic.

Gathering in Haringey, which is known to be a region where many Turkish speaking communities reside, the event took place at the Şelale Restaurant with as a breakfast programme. Some familiar faces detected amongst the guests were the President of Atatürk Ideology Charity (İngiltere Atatürkçü Düşünce Derneği) Jale Özer, Azerbajijian House Charity President Dr. Ali Tekin Atalar and CHP UK Founding President Baki Düzgün. As another important topic behind the Turkey’s constitution agenda, Mr Dikme also touched upon the news from the long-awaited CHP UK Headquarters, which is due to finish soon to be met with communities in the UK. Mr Dikme remarked the importance of news by saying:

“This is very significant for all of us – finally CHP UK will have its headquarters and we will finally hold our meetings at our own place”

“OUR –NO- CAMPAIGN STARTS NOW”

Mr Dikme also gave a speech on the No campaign by tackling the importance of the upcoming referendum and its possible aftermath(s).

“Tomorrow will be too late! Turkish people had already made their decision back in 1923 when the Republic was first declared. Today’s dictated presidential system and constitution amendments are definitely not a need that Turkish people would like to have and go for. Turkish Republic is being dragged along to a dictatorship. This would result in losing our secular nature and would open more ways for military coups. Anti-democratic movements would gain power. Almost every developed country in the world has embraced parliamentary system, Turkish people should not allow this change to take place”
