Turkish man pleads diminished responsibility owing to drug abuse and untreatable personality disorder

sessecarA TURKISH MAN has been jailed for life after stabbing his wife 58 times in Croydon around Christmas 2012.

Bülent Sessaçar, 29, of Duppas Hill Terrace, Croydon was charged with the murder of his 25-year-old wife Rebecca, but the prosecution accepted his plea on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

He was jailed on Monday for a minimum term of 10 years and eight months.

Police had been called to the Croydon address on 20 December at 3.23pm following reports of a disturbance.  Officers forced entry and found a woman suffering injuries.

London Ambulance Service attended and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Bulent Sessaçar, 29, was found at the address by attending officers. He was arrested on suspicion of murder and taken into police custody.

An incident room opened under Detective Chief Inspector Russell Taylor of the Homicide and Major Crime Command.

Enquiries established that Sessaçar and his wife had been arguing earlier on the day of the attack.

On their return home the argument continued and led to Sessaçar stabbing his wife 58 times with a two kitchen knives within the home.

Detective Chief Inspector Russell Taylor said: “This is a tragic incident that has effectively left a young child without both her parents.

“Whilst Sessaçar’s mental health issues were a factor in the attack, it is right that he should face the consequences.”

Two days before the killing, Sessaçar had received a plice caution for assaulting his wife but was allowed to return home after she said she did not want to press charges.

Prosecutor Sally Howes QC said at his trial: “Bulent Sessaçar killed his wife. He stabbed her repeatedly in a frenzied and sustained attack.

“The killing took place in the family home and it was witnessed by [the six year-old girl] who sustained minor injuries as he struggled to push her into a bedroom.”

Judge Nicholas Cooke QC said Sessaçar would have been handed a 20-year minimum sentence if it were a murder charge.

But he said: “I am satisfied that you are dangerous and will remain so for an unascertainable period.

“The combination of an untreatable personality disorder and a propensity to abuse drugs against the background of the explosion of violence dictates as much.

“I have therefore been driven to the conclusion I must pass a sentence of life imprisonment upon you.”
