As the countdown to Ramadan has started Mevlana Rumi Mosque has announced that it will be opening its doors every night to all at iftar throughout the month.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is practised by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad (PBUH) according to Islamic belief. This annual practise is regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam. The month lasts 29–30 days based on the visual sightings of the crescent moon. In addition to refraining from eating and drinking, Muslims also increase restraint, such as abstaining from sexual relations and generally sinful speech and behaviour. The act of fasting is said to redirect the heart away from worldly activities, its purpose being to cleanse the soul by freeing it from harmful impurities. Ramadan also teaches Muslims how to better practice self-discipline, self-control, sacrifice, and empathy for those who are less fortunate; therefore encouraging actions of generosity and compulsory charity.

When the month of Ramadan begins, Muslims enter into a period of discipline and worship:  fasting during the day, and praying throughout the day and night.  During Ramadan, special evening prayers are conducted during which long portions of the Qur’an are recited.  These special prayers are known as taraweeh. In this holy month of Ramadan Muslims restrict from eating and drinking from dawn till sunset. During the summer this could be up to 18 hours. To contribute and promote community cohesion Mevlana Rumi Mosque will be throwing open their doors throughout June and cooking meals for the whole community to mark the special month of Ramadan.  The iftar meal will be followed by a sermon by Imam and the taraweeh prayer will commence for men and women in congregation at 11.00pm. furthermore there will be a daily Quran reading every day at 11.30 am for ladies and for 6.15pm for the whole congregation.

Also currently at Mevlana Rumi Mosque they have collaborated with Time To Help Uk and are collection charity donations to personally take to Pakistan during Ramadan.
