A landmark department store in Wood Green is to close down after 75 years of trading.

The Marks and Spencer branch on the High Road is facing closure because it has been assessed as being no longer financially viable.

78-year-old Katherine Phelan, who worked in every department of the store for nearly two decades, told a local newspaper that she was devastated by the plans.

She told the Tottenham and Wood Green Independent: “I am real sad that Marks is going to be closed, it’ll be a terribly sad day when it goes. I knew when they closed the top part the bottom wouldn’t survive.

“Whatever replaces that shop it will never be the same or mean as much as what has been there for all those years.”

The store on Wood Green High Road opened in 1938.

Catherine West, the Labour MP for Hornsey and Wood Green, said on social media that she was “gutted”.

She wrote on Twitter: “Gutted to hear that Marks and Spencer is quitting Wood Green High Road. Is this the One Nation economy?”

And Haringey council leader Claire Kober said she was “very concerned to hear Marks and Spencer plan to pull out of Wood Green High Road with 60 jobs affected”.

Marks and Spencer said the store’s staff would be offered roles in other branches if the closure takes place.

A spokesman for M&S said: “After much consideration we have taken the difficult decision to propose the closure of the Wood Green store.

“We have been offering roles for all colleagues in nearby stores if the proposal goes ahead.”
