Merve Bayındır, a London-based Turkish designer, has gained recognition for crafting bespoke hats worn by attendees at the prestigious Royal Ascot horse races. In an interview with Reuters, Bayındır described the event as the “Oscars and Golden Globes” for milliners, emphasizing the significance of showcasing numerous exquisite hats in a single week.
Held annually in Ascot, just outside London, the five-day event attracts fashion enthusiasts and members of the British royal family. Strict dress codes are enforced, including a requirement for hats to have a minimum diameter of 10 centimetres.
Bayındır noted that recent trends at the event feature pastel pinks and blues, with green and lilac also gaining popularity. She highlighted that at Royal Ascot, the size of the hat often correlates with its impact, stating, “The bigger the better.”
Emphasizing the event’s grand identity, Bayındır remarked, “To truly appreciate Royal Ascot, you must fill its grand persona.”
Through her craftsmanship, Bayındır not only contributes to the fashion scene but also showcases Turkish talent on a global stage.
