May 19 marks the day in 1919 when Mustafa Kemal Atatürk landed in Samsun and initiated the Turkish War of Independence. It is recognized as the founding moment of the Republic of Turkey and was dedicated by Atatürk to the youth of the nation. Celebrated annually as the Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day, May 19 symbolizes the trust placed in young people and the enduring spirit of the national struggle. It is a national holiday in both Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, observed with ceremonies, parades, and various sports and cultural events.
