Representing Tanyel’s Smile, the children’s cancer charity, 2 Metropolitan Police officers will be taking up a gruesome 20-30 days cycling challenge across Europe on 23rd September 2023. In doing so they hope to help children with cancer in Northern Cyprus.
PC Ceyhun Uzun with PC Ryan Mckinlay are both based at Safer Transport in Central London. They are cycling 2500 miles and raising awareness across Europe from London to Cyprus.
PC Uzun set up the charity with his wife after losing their only child Tanyel in 2016, to Ewing sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, at the tender age of 20. She was treated at Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton from 2013 to 2016.
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. This ride aims to raise awareness for childhood cancer. The charity was named after Tanyel, Tanyel’s Smile helping children up to age 24 in Cyprus, where she enjoyed her summer holidays every year.
Gulay and PC Ceyhun Uzun
PC Uzun has 3 Guinness World Records and received a British Empire Medal for his 30 years of policing and charity work, while PC Mckinlay is a two-time national champion Athlete. Both officers will be taking a month off work unpaid to help raise as much for the charity as possible.
In a statement, Gulay Uzun said the money raised will be helping family that are facing childhood cancer “The money we raise will help us take them out for meals with their families, give vouchers for clothing/food. Buy presents, transfer money to family’s who are in financial difficulties. Special wishes like sending terminal ill on holiday, and buy them anything they would want like eg football team shirt etc…”
Adding “On Saturday 23rd September 2023 my crazy husband Ceyhun Uzun and his crazier colleague Ryan Mckinlay two Metropolitan police officers will be taking on their biggest challenge by cycling from London to Cyprus, starting from New Scotland Yard Central London and then past where my girls resting place is Eltham cemetery, cycling across Europe to Cyprus 2500 miles which is 4023 Km…”
