Londra Gazete looks at the first batch of potential candidates for the Edmonton Labour nomination

A local MP’s sudden decision to step down has raised the prospect of a Turkish-speaking member of the House of Commons in just four months’ time.

Andy Love, who has represented Edmonton in North London for eighteen years, said he was stepping down “after much consideration and 18 years representing Edmonton”.

His decision, coming barely 16 weeks before the general election, has electrified party activists and members of London’s Turkish-speaking communities because he held his seat with a majority approaching 10,000 five years ago.

This would suggest the Labour nominee for Edmonton is a very strong bet to become its next member of parliament.

DOĞUŞ’S HAT IN THE RING

The 2011 census revealed Enfield was home to largest number of Turkish-speakers in the UK and, of these, a majority live in Edmonton.

As Londra Gazete went to press on Wednesday night, three people had formally declared their bid to become Labour’s nominee for the constituency. Several others were widely rumoured to be considering a run.

The first to declare his hand was İbrahim Doğuş, the director of the Centre for Turkey Studies and a prominent Labour Party fundraiser.

Mr Doğuş, who also organised last week’s British Kebab Awards, narrowly lost his party’s nomination for the neighbouring seat of Enfield Southgate to Bambos Charalambous. He confirmed on Wednesday that he would be applying to become Labour’s nominee for Edmonton.

Joining him are Joseph Ejiofor, Haringey councillor for Bruce Grove ward, and trade unionist Kingsley Abrams, who both declared their intentions on Twitter.

OTHER STRONG CONTENDERS

But sources have told Londra Gazete that other leading figures in the London Labour Party are considering a bid for the last-minute safe seat. They include Joanne McCartney, London Assembly member for Enfield and Haringey, who is understood to have already written to local party members in Edmonton.

Also considering a run is Councillor Doug Taylor, who began his second term as leader of Enfield Council last year and is intimately connected to the area.

Former Hackney councillor and Labour National Executive Committee member Luke Akhurst and Ivana Bartoletti, a candidate for the European Parliament at last May’s elections, are also potential candidates for Edmonton.

And other Turkish-speaking candidates may yet come forward. A number of councillors in North London approached by Londra Gazete this week did not rule themselves out of a bid but refused to speak on the record, saying they were still exploring the possibility.

RIVAL CONTENDERS

The Conservative Party has long selected its candidate: Gönül Daniels, known to some in the Turkish-speaking communities, will be looking to win Edmonton back to her party for the first time since 1997.

She will be challenged by Neville Watson, the UK Independence Party candidate, and Green candidate Douglas Coker.
