London has passed the peak of the second coronavirus wave, new figures suggest.

Covid-19 cases dropped in 22 boroughs, according to the latest weekly figures, while researchers at Cambridge University estimate that up to 36 per cent of Londoners may already have had the virus.

However, the city’s public health chief Professor Kevin Fenton warned that case rates “remain extremely high” and “we have more difficult weeks ahead of us”.

It comes as a leading British virologist said a highly contagious Brazilian Covid strain that prompted a travel ban from South America – has not yet been found in the UK. However, the Government adviser said another variant from Brazil was detected in Britain “some time ago.”

More than 3 million people vaccinated in England

A total of 3,189,674 Covid-19 vaccinations had taken place in England between December 8 and January 14, according to provisional NHS England data, including first and second doses, which is a rise of 279,647 on yesterday’s figures.

Of this number, 2,769,164 were the first dose of the vaccine, a rise of 274,793 on Thursday’s figures, while 420,510 were the second dose, an increase of 4,854.
