Foreign Minister pays tribute to Turkey’s “wonderful, great friend”, who has died at the age of 88
Hayatını kaybeden İstanbul doğumlu İngiliz yazar ve tarihçi Andrew Mango’ya, 2012 yılında Çanakkale 18 Mart Üniversitesi tarafından fahri doktora unvanı verildi.

Andrew Mango was given an honorary doctorate in 2012

The veteran author and scholar of Turkish studies, Andrew Mango, died last weekend in London following a long illness.

The 88-year-old was well-known for his biography on Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey, and for his time as head of the Turkish section at the BBC World Service.

The British ambassador to Turkey Richard Moore was one of the first to pay tribute to him.

“Sad to hear of the death last night of the great Andrew Mango, biographer of Ataturk and UK doyen of Turkish studies,” he wrote on Twitter on Monday. “He was enormously kind to me earlier in my career. We will all miss his erudition and humanity.”

Turkey’s foreign minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said Mango was “a wonderful man [and] a great friend of Turkey”.

In a statement he continued: “Mr. Mango will be remembered as a true intellectual and his work and contribution will continue to draw respect from generations to come. Being familiar with his enduring interest in Turkey and having had the privilege of benefitting from his wisdom, I feel the sorrow on his loss all the more closely.

“With these thoughts, my colleagues who collaborated with him at the Ministry also join me extending our condolences to the family members of Mr. Andrew Mango. May his soul rest in peace.”

Mango was born in Istanbul to an Anglo-Russian family in 1926. He spent his early career as a press officer for the British Embassy in Ankara, but moved to Britain in 1947, where he continued to work on Turkish matters.

He joined the BBC Turkish section in 1958 and rose to become its director, and eventually became head of Southern European languages at the World Service until his retirement in 1986.

He was honoured at the Turkish embassy with an honorary doctorate from Çanakkale 18 Mart University, but the following year he made headlines in Turkey for being harshly critical of the government’s response to the Gezi Park protests.

His other books included “Turkey” (1968), “Discovering Turkey” (1971), “Turkey: The Challenge of a New Role” (1994), “The Turks Today” (2004), “Turkey and the War on Terrorism” (2005) and “From the Sultan to Atatürk – Turkey” (2009).
