ROYAL Mail is increasing the price of first and second class stamps by a penny. How much do stamps cost now?

The stamp price rise on Monday March 27) means that it is now more expensive for Britons to send letters to their loved ones.

Royal Mail defended the price hike and said the changes are needed to “to help ensure the sustainability of the Universal Postal Service”.

How much have stamp prices increased today?

The price of a first class stamp has increased by 1p to 65p and the price of a second class stamp has risen by 1p to 56p.

The latest price hike comes after the cost of first and second class stamps also went up by 1p a year ago in March 2016.

If you are sending a large letter, the first class stamp price has gone up by 2p to 98p and the second class stamp price has increased by 1p to 76p.

Why has Royal Mail increased stamp prices today?

Royal Mail argued that British stamps remain among the “best value in Europe” when compared with their European counterparts.

The group said: “Royal Mail understands how hard it is for many companies and households in the current economic environment.

“For that reason, we have considered any pricing changes very carefully and have sought to minimise any impact on our customers.”

Paul Green, director of communications at Saga, said that many older people rely on the postal service and still like to “put pen to paper”.

He said: “If the price increase enables [Royal Mail] to maintain or improve their service that would be a fair exchange. The important thing is to make sure they deliver.”
