Alevi Federation UK organised an event tackling “violence against women” at their Stoke Newington branch.

Attending to the event, were Britain Alevi Federation Women Branches President Özlem Şahin, Therapist Pınar Öntaş, Police Officer Ali Dağ, Board of Directors member Elif Bulut and Advantage Solicitors Sümeyye Kandemir and Hatice Sağlam did attend the event briefing the people on violence against women and different types of violation. Violence against women and girls is still a global pandemic. Around the world, a third of women have experienced either sexual or physical violence – mostly at the hands of an intimate partner. Millions more are subjected to female genital mutilation (FGM), child marriage and sexual harassment – all of which undermine the basic civil rights of women and girls, from health to security.

Police Officer Ali Dağ, tackled the seasonal differences by comparing the law with 20 years ago.

“Unfortunately the greatest barrier on stopping the violence is that women are afraid to report their abusers. The law and investigation techniques are much more enhanced compared to 20 years ago, women should not be hesitant reporting their abusers”

As the number of prosecutions relating to violence against women and girls in England and Wales reached a record level last year, the director of public prosecutions said, as she warned of the increasing use of social media to threaten and control.

At the speeches, emotional violence was tackled as much as the physical violence. Sümeyye Kandemir from the Advantage Solicitors, said many women are in fear to report being abused as their husbands or abusers threaten them with their lives or other deflective ways. Miss Kandemir highlighted the fact that it shouldn’t stop abused individuals to take an action as the current law can and will protect their lives and wellbeing along the way.
